That's Gourmet?!?

The dictionary defines ‘gourmet’ as “of very high quality," “involving … high-quality or exotic ingredients and skilled preparation.” However, those definitions, seem incomplete. Gourmet is in the eye of the beholder, so to speak.

Let's consider the term ‘gourmet’ in general:

• High-quality – Yes!
• Exotic ingredients – Yes!
• Skilled preparation – Yes! (Although, how do we define skilled preparation ...?)

But when you add context, it becomes a little more obvious. Which is more special:

• Cubic Zirconium or diamonds?
• McBurger or Steak?
• Volkswagen or Porsche?
• Chocolate pudding or chocolate mousse?
• Kool-aid or Champagne?

Obviously, sometimes the first is more appropriate than the second. But does the person you want to spend the rest of your life with deserve cubic zirconium? Will you treat your best employee or most steadfast customer to a McBurger? Some Volkswagens handle well, but as well as a Porsche? Really?

Face it, pudding is for Bill Cosby and children. And are you really going to celebrate a major accomplishment with Kool-aid? I think not!

Would you send Chips Ahoy cookies to your friends or family for their birthdays? What woud the message be if the cookies are coming from your business?

Before you think I’m dismissing an American standard, I love Chips Ahoy and Oreo cookies. But they are … a snack. They’re not special. They’re not “gourmet.”

Gourmet is a gift that implies quality. It is special and extraordinary, unique and rare. It is an indication this gift is special and implies by the giver the recipient is also special and extraordinary, unique and rare.
